Visual Stress

visual stress

Some individuals who find reading tiring and unpleasant may unknowingly experience Visual Stress, so we have a dedicated clinic to help diagnose and treat those who suffer from it.

what is visual stress?

Visual stress is a term used to describe visual discomfort and perceptual distortions in printed text, and is suffered by some people who struggle to read. Symptoms can be experienced in varying degrees from simple fatigue to difficulties when looking at text.

If you experience:

  • Movement of printed text
  • Blurring of print
  • Letters changing in size or shape
  • Patterns in the print (sometimes described as rivers or worms)
  • Halos of colour surrounding letters or words
  • Tiring easily whilst reading
  • Headaches or visual discomfort

You may be experiencing visual stress and could greatly benefit from a visual stress assessment.

how is visual stress treated?

In some cases, the symptoms of visual stress can be reduced by the use of coloured filters. This can be achieved by the use of either coloured overlays, or specially tinted lenses for your spectacles.

Step one is a full eye examination, which will help rule out any potential underlying conditions prior to testing for visual stress. After a full eye examination has been carried out, we can then begin the visual stress assessment and find the specific tone, brightness and colour that reduces the symptoms that are being experienced.

Each person will respond to different colours in different ways, meaning there is no 'one colour fits all' approach in visual stress. The best results are achieved when we are able to customise and tailor the colour as specifically to each individual as possible. How can we measure such a specific colour tone? By using a very advanced instrument known as The Intuitive Colorimeter™.

The Intuitive Colorimeter™

The Intuitive Colorimeter™ was designed by Professor Arnold Wilkins at the British Medical Research Council in 1993.

This instrument was expertly designed to present thousands of different colours in the colour spectrum in a smooth, flowing, and easy fashion. With the help of our specialists, you will be guided through the straightforward process to help identify the precise colour that can reduce your symptoms of visual stress.

The colour that is identified can then be applied to your spectacle lenses so that whatever task you undertake, you can enjoy the benefit of symptom relief easily and comfortably.
